Eimco Water Technologies - harnessing the power of water
Eimco Water Technologies (EWT), a division of Canadian-based GLV Inc, is a major supplier of water and waste water screening products to the power and industrial markets in over 80 countries throughout the world. The company, which is based at Colchester in Essex, is the global centre of excellence for the design and supply of equipment used to manage large-scale water intakes for the leading companies in the power, oil and gas sector worldwide. EWT also produces a range of solutions for major water desalination plants for human consumption and irrigation, including coarse to fine screens and a range of automatic pipeline filtration in-line condenser tube cleaning systems and isolation devices.
Water treatment is essential to the efficient operation of these industries, according to Sales Manager Daniel Bewg,
“We’re talking about huge volumes of water. For applications like cooling water for power stations, Eimco Water Technologies (EWT) equipment may be filtering volumes of sea water equivalent to almost five times the flow of the River Thames. We treat the sea water to remove particles and other impurities, turning it into what is known as technical water. Further treatment of the water makes it suitable for use in industrial boilers and other applications on a site.”
EWT is now playing an important role in the battle for carbon reduction. The Essex company is utilising its core engineering skills to develop a range of innovative products used in the process of capturing and safe underground storage of carbon as part of the drive to reduce its impact on the environment. In Norway, for example, EWT equipment is being applied to the process of capturing carbon from the furnaces of a power plant and pumping it into an old oil reservoir.
Comprehensive customer support is vital to complex technology like this, and the Colchester site is responsible for the provision of consultancy, design and advisory services, as well as installation, commissioning and maintenance.
“We employ approximately 50 technical and engineering staff based at Colchester,” says Daniel Bewg. “They travel regularly to customers in Europe, the Middle East and China. We also have a large number of overseas customers visiting us, so it’s important to have an international facility like London Stansted Airport close by. The train service gives us quick access to our clients with headquarters in London.”
Essex is also important for sourcing key components such as sophisticated control systems or small fabrications, as well as access to sub-contractors and specialist technical skills, according to Daniel Bewg.
“We have built up a network of high-quality suppliers and sub-contractors based in Essex and East Anglia. The county’s high-technology heritage also means that we can draw on a wide range of essential skills.”
The company continues to expand as market demand for water solutions grows. With its good transport infrastructure and access to the right skills, Daniel Bewg, believes that Essex has proved a good location for a specialist company operating in global markets.
