Play to Z

INVEST Essex - Essex's Inward Investment Team

For budding Colchester entrepreneur and mother of two Sue Gascoyne, the last year has been an exciting journey.  From having a simple business concept at the beginning of the year Sue has worked hard to develop it right through to the launch of a new product and company, Play to Z - and all with the help of the Essex Innovation Network(EIN).

With the continued support of the EIN Play to Z has just exhibited at it’s first major educational trade show in London and Sue is very excited by the responses received to her innovative educational product.  Although the product has only just been launched, orders are coming in from schools and nurseries, and trials are proving highly successful. The Times Educational show at the end of September enabled Sue to test the reactions of other industry professionals. Sue gained really positive feedback from visitors and exhibitors alike, and is now concentrating on turning that interest into sales.

“The access to resources has been really useful, and the willingness and can-do approach of everyone involved with the Essex Innovation Network is invaluable.”

“The idea for Playscope, a sensory treasure basket and accompanying playful learning activities, came from observing my own children playing with baskets I had put together, inspired by Elinor Goldschmeid, the ‘inventor’ of treasure baskets. The treasure baskets are made up of various items with the aim of encouraging sensory and exploratory play in young children; this ‘free play’ can also be directed and expanded upon with the use of the game cards I’ve created, inspired by observing children playing with the treasure baskets. Wherever possible, I’ve tried to use recycled and locally sourced products. The baskets are made from organic Norfolk willow, and many of the 50 objects in every basket have been handmade and commissioned to be made by adults with physical and learning difficulties. ”
