Willmott Dixon in Essex

In September 2018, Willmott Dixon announced they were to open a new office at the Vision Co-Working Spaces in Chelmsford  – their first permanent base in the East of England. The official launch took place in February 2019.

Although they have just moved to their first permanent base in Essex, Willmott Dixon have played an important role in the development of the county in recent years, perhaps most notably through the construction of numerous major university and college buildings. As a company which aims to create a huge and lasting positive impact on society, these projects aim to provide the next generation with the skills of the future.

Some of the main projects they have been responsible for include:

  • Anglia Ruskin School of Medicine – completed in June 2018
  • Stansted Airport College – completed in August 2018
  • Harlow College, an ‘Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Centre’ – competed in January 2017.
Anglia Ruskin Medical School

Anglia Ruskin School of Medicine is the first undergraduate school of medicine in Essex and seeks to address some of the medical workforce shortages that the county is facing.

Stansted Airport College will train approximately 530 new adults per year in vocational skills, traineeships and apprenticeships, seeking to bridge the current skills gap in the STEM industries.

Harlow College (AMEC) provides a link between students and industry, seeking to equip young people in the local area with in-demand skills which will be required as manufacturers relocate to Harlow’s Enterprise Zone.

As well as being responsible for the construction of these significant buildings, Willmott Dixon have also been responsible for projects in Essex including Colchester Institute, the Holiday Inn Hotel at Southend-on-Sea and building the first homes commissioned by Thurrock Council in 30 years for people over the age of 55.

How Invest ESSEX supported Willmott Dixon

Willmott Dixon initially sought the need to have an Essex office due to their pre-existing presence in the county, where many of their employees are already located.

“We are delighted to welcome this long-established, family-owned business to the city and very much share their company vision and values. We look forward to continuing this relationship and helping Willmott Dixon establish themselves further in Essex.”

Other reasons for the decision include the fact that Willmott Dixon see Essex as ‘a place of growth where investment in people and skills is on the rise’ and the agile, collaborative, project-led working space offered by the Vision offices at Saxon House in Chelmsford. They will encourage both reconstruction and operations staff to use the space, as well as partners and customers alike.

After initially meeting at the opening of Harlow College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Centre in March 2017, Invest ESSEX’s ERDF funded advisors gave Willmott Dixon the support they needed to find suitable office space at Vision in Chelmsford – a city with a thriving business community which contributes over £3.5 billion to the national economy.
