“Over the next decade, runway capacity in the south-east will be at a premium and Stansted will be responsible for delivering 50% of London’s expected passenger growth and make a greater contribution to improving the UK’s connectivity with the rest of the world so it’s key we develop a supply line of talent and unlock our spare runway capacity.”

Invest ESSEX supporting the transformation of London Stansted Airport

Invest ESSEX is giving its full support to the proposed transformation of London Stansted Airport which will see a £600m revamp of the airport. The five-year plan will include a new terminal for arriving passengers and the conversion of the existing terminal into a dedicated departing passengers-only facility.

Stansted, at the heart of the London-Cambridge corridor, is crucial for the success of businesses in the East of England region – particularly so for the county of Essex. The airport is advantageously positioned for business travellers. It is seen as a core transport hub with unparalleled access to the M11 corridor with a reach of 17 million people within 2 hours and 1.2 million within 30 minutes. INVEST Essex has seen the value of Stansted at close quarters assisting several businesses to trade globally with help from the expanding airport.

“London Stansted Airport is a critical economic asset for Essex and its increasing route network is a major attraction to international companies looking to invest and establish a presence in the region. Companies have chosen Stansted because of links to serve their burgeoning European market, while growth and new business at Chesterford Research Park and Harlow Science Park will benefit significantly from new direct US links to the life science clusters centred on Boston and New York.”

London Stansted boosting regional and national competitiveness

As the London area’s fastest growing airport and with plans to maximise the potential of existing runway capacity, Stansted is well placed to meet rising demand from airlines across the world eager to gain access or grow within the London aviation market.

“Stansted sits at the heart of one of the UK’s fastest growing and most successful economic regions, reflecting the competitiveness and ambition of the businesses trading here. We need to demonstrate this strength of demand to airlines who are not currently serving Stansted."

In addition, Stansted already provides the most direct connections to Europe of any UK airport, and this network is set to grow further as the airport works with existing and new carriers to provide even more choice.

The Airport plan to build a direct connection between the knowledge centres of the technology clusters of Silicon Fen and Silicon Valley. This will result in passengers no longer having to make time-consuming and expensive trips to other airports across the UK.

This year, London Stansted has secured six of the top ten most in-demand routes such as, New York, Dubai, Boston, Washington, Toronto and Tel Aviv. Further plans include adding more direct services to destinations across China, India, North America and the Middle East.
